Possible Topics
Your Goal
Using reliable sources, write a research paper that explains a problem that has existed (or currently exists) in an open fluid system and the steps that were taken to solve the problem. Then, create a Powerpoint presentation to share your work.
Requirements
- The paper must be between 2 and 4 pages, double spaced, 12 point font.
- The topic of your paper either needs to come from the back page of the assignment sheet or be teacher approved. (Send me an email)
- You must incorporate at least 5 sources in your report.
- You must include at least two direct quotes from reliable sources.
- A bibliography must be included to cite your sources.
Constraints
- You will have three weeks to complete your project.
- Students in each class must have their own topics.
- The audience for your project is your classmates and your parents.
Scoring
This project will be worth 235 points divided up below.
Daily Focus (0-30 Work Habits points) - 2 points per day
- Did you begin working on your project without prompting? 1 point per day - (0-15 points)
- Did you spend your time focused on your project? 1 point per day - (0-15 points)
Report (0-155 Research points)
- Report has a descriptive title and appropriate headings.
- Report is at least two pages long, but no longer than four pages.
- Report is understandable to an audience of peers.
- Report gives appropriate background information.
- Report reflects an understanding of the topic that was researched.
- Report contains a bibliography with at least five sources.
- Report has at least two quotes from reliable sources.
- No spelling or grammar errors present in your writing.
Presentation (0-50 Modeling points)
- Present your work to your peers in a 5-10 minute presentation. (with visual aids)
- Post the information on Digication

Notes for December 7th - Degrees of Freedom
Your Goal
With your assigned group, create a device that uses hydraulics to pick up a small ball(1.5" diameter) and drop it through the hoop.
Requirements
- The ball must begin stilling on a flat surface with a small hole to keep the ball from moving.
- The device must begin at least 3 inches from the ball.
- Other than using the hydraulic controls, you cannot touch your device.
Constraints
- You may only use the materials provided in class or common household items.
- You may only work on your project at school.
- Your project must be demonstrated before you leave for winter break.
- Your project must be posted on digication by the time you arrive back from winter break.
Scoring (This project will be worth 195 Modeling points divided up below.)
Teamwork - Individual Grade (0-45 points)
- Did you begin working on your project without prompting? 1 point per day - (0-15 points)
- Did you spend your time focused on your group's project? 1 point per day - (0-15 points)
- Did you use materials and tools appropriately? 1 point per day - (0-15 points)
Performance - Group Grade (0-100 points)
If your hydraulic hand . . .
- … shows no usable motion (0-60 points)
- … has motion that you can predict (60-70 points)
- … can touch the ball (70-80 points)
- … can lift the ball (80-90 points)
- … can deliver the ball to the goal (90-100 points)
Presentation - Individual Grade (0-50 points)
- (10 points) Write a brief introduction to your project.
- (10 points) Post a picture of your final project.
- (10 points) Post the slides you prepared for your design review. (For full points, make sure you use captions or headings to introduce the work.
- (10 points) Post a video of your project being demonstrated
- (10 points) Describe how you use the engineering design process to reach your final solution.
- What initial research did you perform?
- List your brainstorming ideas.
- How did your first prototype work?
- What changes did you make?

Due Dec 12th
Your Goal
1. Add one major project from the first trimester to Digication
- You user name is the same as your email login and the first time password is innovation.
- If you need help, you come to extra help on Thursdays or ask a classmate for help.
2. Send me an email to indicate that it is completed.
3. Wait for a reply from me and make any changes that I send to you to make.
Scoring
- This project is worth 50 modeling points, so make your page look nice.
- You will lose 5 points of work habits every day that it is late
- If you do a fine job and there is nothing wrong, you will get 40/50 points. To get 50 points, make it look extra good and take time to make your presentation impressive. Use bolding, itallics, pictures, color and show everything you can about your project.
